Location: Metuchen, NJ
Overview
Everyone in America should be as fit and trim as this active young couple. Even their dogs ate healthy organic dog food. The old kitchen space had very dark cabinets which made the space seem smaller than it was. An old brown checkerboard floor did not help the rooms’ space. It was important to use the space both as a serving and kitchen area that was at this time separated by a wall. The goal was to open the space into the adjacent room.
Challenges
A bearing wall needed to be removed to create one larger space to accommodate the once physically divided rooms. Also it was important to have plenty of space for all the food utensils and large collection of baking and cooking vessels that needed to be stored in the kitchen. Efficiency was also very important for this physically fit and intellectually stimulating couple.
Notes
An engineered wood header was installed to support the floor above .Cooking ,cleaning and food preparation areas were carefully designed to make an efficient use of the space. An Amtico vinyl simulated wood floor created the warm look of real wood but also had the durability that wood floors might not have with their dogs. Once the room dividing wall was opened, a glass door buffet -serving area was designed with matching cabinets to make the two rooms flow together.
