Overview
The room was a very large space overlooking an adjacent family room that was open to the kitchen.

The furniture in that room was very contemporary creating a theme that was sleek and modern but not too much that it would conflict with the appearance of the adjacent room. It had to "flow" into the other room.

The client was concerned that the large space should have enough cabinets to handle the storage of dishes, pots, glassware and food and yet not be so overwhelming that the feeling of the room would be overcrowded with cabinets just to fill space.

Another challenge was to eliminate a separate table and chairs for eating and create an island with a lowered seating area that would be a "part" of the kitchen.

Also, the cabinet finish to create that contemporary look needed to be high gloss, that wasn’t solid in color to mimic plastic laminate, nor should have a stained woodsy appearance.

Solution:
Together with the cabinet manufacturer a translucent stain was developed that would allow the graining of the doors to be very subtle in appearance so you could see it through the Avenir high gloss finish.

At first a black finish was to be used, but that looked like everyone else’s kitchen. So gray was considered. Paint strip samples representing different shades of gray were sent to the factory. The process of then creating a translucent stain from a solid paint chip color had to be done. The specie of wood also had to be chosen that would best create the look wanted by the client.

A total of 36 sample blocks in black and gray ranging in shade and wood specie were made to help the client pick out something that would wow them forever.

Most designers would cringe with making that many samples. However, having the clients happy every day when they walked into their kitchen is what Abbey’s is all about. Our philosophy is to "Live your life in rooms you love".
