Welcome: http://www.abbeys.com
Abbey's has the experience and creativity to handle the most demanding kitchen, bath and interior remodeling projects. For more than 25 years, we have been producing superior results for the most discerning clients in the world. You deserve to live your life in rooms you love!
Kitchens: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens.htm
Abbey's can take a tight place and make it the right space. That might mean moving a wall, closing a doorway, using a hall, dropping a ceiling, adding some sun -- with the emphasis on function and fun.
A kitchen should offer every variation on a cooking theme. Sometimes, you're harried and hurried. You've got just enough time to "zap or nuke" a frozen something and run. A well-placed microwave, custom cabinetry and utensils drawer can help you keep pace with a golf tee time, the ballet, or even the dentist.
But, what about those gourmet days?
You've clipped a recipe from a favorite magazine, bought all the special ingredients and the only thing you're certain of is that you'll be in the kitchen for quite a while.
Foot-friendly flooring, superior appliances and a dynamic color scheme might make you feel a bit like guest master chef sans assistants.
There's only one thing better than the dessert you've decided to make--an easy-to-load, quiet dishwasher with the capacity to give the cook a rest.
Be forewarned! Neighbors might want to test-drive your top-of-the-line appliances. They'll rubberneck to check out the improved traffic patterns between your refrigerator, range and phone.
Kitchen 1: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port1.htm
Country Classic
Location: Madison, NJ
Overview
For this project, Abbey’s was brought in as a subcontractor to work with an interior decorator for color choices as well as a designer for the kitchen. The clients conveyed their desires to the decorator who then conveyed them to the team. As kitchen consultant,
Steven implemented the design, supplied materials and labor, and, managed the project. The three of them worked remarkably well together.
Challenges
Pleasing the decorator in terms of precise colors proved a significant challenge. She and Steven went to the paint factory to oversee the mixing of the green paint, which is prominent throughout the kitchen. The warmth of the green, complimented by cream color-stained wood, and cabinetry with a furniture look blends well with stainless steel appliances.
Notes
This kitchen accommodates an active family of four easily. They have a medium-level of cooking activity/entertaining/high ceilings vaulted/lots of daylight.
Kitchen 2: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port2.htm
Stainless Steel
Location: Hoboken, NJ
Overview
This all-purpose kitchen was created primarily for the wife, a professional chef and cooking teacher. She wanted as much of a commercial kitchen in a residential setting as possible. This was accomplished with stainless steel; sleek lines; and doorless wall cabinetry for high visibility of and easy access to the contents. The kitchen can now accommodate her cooking class students or a houseful of guests when the couple entertains.
Challenges
Taking commercial materials and adapting them to a residential setting presented interesting challenges. For example, the restaurant range required that the wall behind it have cement sheets installed to deal with the intensified heat. A hood was designed with an exhaust and makeup air, which pulls air from the house to be blown back in. It was sleek and efficient, but with tile accenting it was warmed up and made to look less clinical.
Notes
Featured in House Beautiful issue and will appear in Signature Kitchens and Baths, Fall 2003.
Kitchen 3: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port3.htm
Warm Woods
Location: Short Hills, NJ
Overview
The client wanted a formal yet functional kitchen where she could easily prepare meals for her on-the-go family of four and, just as handily, use it for feeding party guests.
Challenges
The challenges were significant to make room and light for this new room. A bathroom was removed and the location of the kitchen was totally reconfigured to allow more natural light to shine in. It required an additional, new window and new patio doors, too.
Natural maple wood flooring was used instead of tile to increase the warmth of the room.
Notes
A custom-made hood mounted on an angle over a professional cooktop is a dominant, yet appealing solution. The backsplash is glass and slate tile. A minor mistake was made masterful on the island countertop when the undermount sink was slightly too small to use a plastic colander. Steve resolved the problem by enlisting a stainless steel fabricator to create a custom-made colander for the sink.
Kitchen 4: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port4.htm
Contemporary Charm
Location: Short Hills, NJ
Overview
The clients behind this great kitchen are a woman who enjoys cooking and her veterinarian husband. They report looking forward to eating breakfast together in this kitchen—one that didn’t follow the usual development timeline. Abbey’s was brought in as consultant for the kitchen portion of an addition to the couple’s home. Typically, kitchen plans are completed first, in this case the whole addition space had been planned first and kitchen within it came second.
Challenges
Making the colors work was an involved process. Fourteen different door stain samples were created until the right custom color was achieved. The vaulted ceiling called for tying in cabinetry lines in such a way as to avoid an abrupt visual transition.
Notes
Special aspects include two ovens for greater flexibility. The Miele oven is used for smaller meals. A Daycor professional range adds to the overall cooking capacity.
Kitchen 5: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port5.htm
Islands of Warmth
Location: Short Hills, NJ
Overview
For this warm, wood-filled kitchen, two rooms were combined to make one efficient and elegant meal-making center for an active family of five.
Challenges
Creating enough space in the island area to seat everyone in the family was one hurdle to clear. Plus, making an intimate space within visually exciting, high-performance space was key to the family’s collective comfort in the kitchen.
Notes
Covering the sizeable refrigerator with wood camouflaged and minimized it. The desk area is an important zone where the chief cook’s recipes are written and revised.
Kitchen 6: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port6.htm
Modern Elegance
Location: Summit, NJ
Overview
In this setting, Abbey’s was brought in to work with a decorator and designer to create a warm and cozy country kitchen.
Challenges
Making the island look more like a fixed table rather than a storage facility was a special goal as well as enabling the client to have two ovens in one location. Using custom cabinetry, the wall oven was mounted into base cabinet. Then, faux drawer heads were used to create the look of working cabinets, which conceal the oven.
Notes
Using frameless cabinets with wood partitions developed a furniture inset door-style look. Cabinets sport paint instead of stain. Beadboard doors on the rear of the island appear to be fixed wainscot paneling, but are actually are touch-latch doors.
Kitchen 7: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port7.htm
Vision In White
Location: Bayonne, NJ
Overview
Making a success of this kitchen meant making the maximum of a small space in a high-rise condominium. The client, a single, retired businesswoman, knew she wanted to use every inch of precious space wisely with an emphasis on having enough storage.
Challenges
Accommodating a washer/dryer unit in the kitchen, creating as much storage as possible within a confined space, and using the area above the water heater located in the kitchen. Bringing electric cables from the breaker box in the hallway into the kitchen without perforating the ceiling, which holds electric heat cables. Plus, the lighting presented similar obstacles.
Notes
Pull-out wire storage was designed for installation over the water heater so as not to waste space. Corian countertops and backsplashes made the small space appear larger. Miele washer and dryer are hidden behind doors matching the cabinetry. A pass-through into the dining/living room area creates an open, airy look.
Kitchen 8: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port8.htm
Comfort Zone
Location: New Providence, NJ
Overview
This kitchen was designed as a brand-new extension to the existing house. With the husband a busy Wall Street executive and wife a full-time mother to two children—they knew they needed and wanted a lot of space in this hub of this active household.
Challenges
Filling the space with necessary, highly accessible cabinetry, but not allowing it to appear overpowering.
Notes
Pull-out storage was a key solution; the entertainment area was designed with refrigeration and a secondary sink; one area uses cabinetry made to look like a furniture-styled hutch that ties in well with all of the other cabinets. Created with various fluting, dentil molding and flush toe kick.
Kitchen 9: http://www.abbeys.com/kitchens_port9.htm
City Island
Location: Montclair, NJ
Overview
An expanding family of four, soon-to-be five, were eager to have a fun-looking and highly functional kitchen redesign. Mom, a former computer consultant had definite ideas about what she envisioned and Dad, a vice president in the entertainment industry backed her concepts. Warm, friendly flooring was an important element from the beginning.
Challenges
A structural challenge presented itself after opening the ceiling, it was necessary to add a support beam. Otherwise, this particular project was nearly challenge-free in large part because the wife and mom knew what she wanted and needed only to be educated about the myriad options from which she could choose.
Notes
Custom, pull-out spice storage with faux drawer heads appears as a bank of drawers. A tilt-down grill was created under bookcase for access to the radiator that could not be moved. Roll-out shelving was installed for deep pantry access. Important features include a desk area; wine storage; secondary entertainment sink; and open pigeonholes for letters/keys, etc. An extra fixed window was added to allow more natural light in.
Baths: http://www.abbeys.com/baths.htm
No longer should your bathroom only be a place to shower, put on make-up, or meet your hygienic needs. With the help of Abbey's expertise, it now becomes a place to remove that morning chill while standing on a toasty heated floor, a place to relieve those stuffy colds in a warm, moist steam room, or maybe just a place to pamper yourself in a luxury whirlpool tub. You've gone the extra mile, you've paid your dues, it's time to reward yourself, at Abbey's we create spaces that truly say, "Live your life in rooms you love."
Interiors: http://www.abbeys.com/interiors.htm
You might think that Abbey's is only interested in designing and creating great kitchens and baths. That's where we started, but over time we've added media rooms, home offices and bedrooms to our portfolio of finished projects.
Technology is a treat. We like it in any form -- VCRs, TVs, CD players. But, we're driven to dress up the drab of buttons and dials.
And, when the mood strikes, we want to be able to hide the hi-tech screens, speakers, cords and remote controls.
You might want a contrasting camouflage of exotic Carpathian elm and natural maple for a multimedia wall unit. Custom-stepped moldings and stepped-end wall would add drama to an art deco-like look. A full-extension drawer system could afford you plenty of storage space for their large collection of CDs and tapes. These kinds of requests are always accepted, and delivered to our clients.
What would you like?
Accessories: http://www.abbeys.com/accessories.htm
From slide out storage areas, specialized knife and cutlery drawers, to plate warmers, tray dividers and pot filler faucets, Abbey's is always on top of the current conveniences, adding form, function and fun to your everyday tasks!
Trust: http://www.abbeys.com/about.htm
When redesigning a kitchen, bath or interior space, you need to feel that you're giving the project over to someone you can trust.
Regardless of your budget, or your timeline, both of which are important, it is this fundamental issue of trust that impacts upon your decision. Who can you trust? How is trust defined?
At Abbey's, I strive to earn your trust, from our first contact to the last details that conclude my work for you.
Listening to you, understanding what you want, clarifying what's not obvious, finding new options for you to consider, working to match your budget and timeline while meeting and exceeding your expectations, solving unforeseen problems and handling every detail to bring our shared vision to life--these are the things I do to gain the trust of every client.
With more than two decades of experience, hundreds of satisfied clients and work that has graced the covers of national magazines, I'm certain that you can trust me with your kitchen, bath or interior remodeling project. In fact, I can do all three simultaneously.
We look forward to working to realize your dreams.
Steven Meltzer, President
Experience: http://www.abbeys.com/about_experience.htm
In any field of endeavor, a person's experience is a critical factor in determining whether or not you want to work with him. A firm's reputation, built on years of hard work and dedication, can give you a sense of capabilities, of competence, of approach and of vision.
Abbey's Kitchens, Baths & Interiors, founded by Steven Meltzer more than 25 years ago, is a company built with the same quest for excellence that is brought to every kitchen, every bathroom and every interior design project that is awarded to the firm.
Working from more of a television production company model that brings together the best group of artisans, designers, craftsmen and experts best suited to a particular project, Abbey's is not shackled by the constraints of having a huge staff of underpaid and overworked employees who view your project as just another job.
Rather, Abbey's brings together a talented team of visionaries, supervised and managed by Steven for the short-term, to achieve a level of excellence that no in-house staff could ever deliver. The result is the formation of a team of excited, motivated artists that view your kitchen, bath or interior space as a canvas upon which they can stamp their imprimatur.
With this approach, Abbey's brings together not only its experience, but also the accumulated years of experience and expertise of the assembled group. Your project is new, fresh, exciting and the results reflect this and provide you with rooms that others will envy. Kitchens abound with ergonomic conveniences and intelligent use of storage space. A bathroom so luxurious you'll make up frivolous reasons to spend extra time in them. Interiors your friends and family will rave about.
Be prepared for questions, photo opportunities and other unique experiences that result from Abbey's experience put to work to create a unique experience for you.
How We Work: http://www.abbeys.com/about_how.htm
I hope I have stimulated your imagination. Once you're ready to start the process, we'll put your project on a fast track to completion.
Abbey's provides consultation and complete design plans. Abbey's can oversee everything, or, if you choose, I'll work alongside your architect or contractor.
Your life and your schedule are unique. If the design of a room serves your lifestyle and reflects your taste, I'm certain you won't see a room just like it -- anywhere. That's solid proof of a custom design: it identifies you almost as precisely as your fingerprint.
My designs follow current safety guidelines and meet the highest standards of quality and comfort. I prefer to schedule a conference in your home and take the necessary preliminary measurements at that time. I'll ask you to tell me how you presently live in your home and how you envision living more comfortably in the future.
Understanding your needs is my chief concern. I do that by carefully listening to you. I know that all aspects of an outcome are always tied to getting the best input.
I will personally help you select the appliances and fixtures that work reliably and realistically within your budget.
I'm known for keeping clients informed as their projects progress and we keep inconvenience to a minimum. The transformation of your room should be an enjoyable part of the design journey.
My team will visit you and take all the necessary measurements to determine the best use of your space.
As expected, I will guide you through design possibilities and help you select the right woods, colors, and accoutrements to match your design with your budget.

Frequently Asked Questions: http://www.abbeys.com/about_frequent.htm
Question: How much will my project cost?
Answer: This is determined by the quality of the cabinetry, the products selected, the amount of labor needed to implement the project and, the size of the space.
Question: How long does the design process usually take?
Answer: This depends on the size of the room, the visualization of the theme of the space, the types of products chosen and the amount of revisions required to satisfy the client's needs. Usually this can be accomplished in 4-8 weeks. However, it can also take as little as two weeks, or as long as a year, depending totally upon the client's interaction and involvement with the project.
Question: How long will the actual construction process take?
Answer: An average kitchen (typically around 15' x 20') with the project including the following: demolishing walls; insulating exterior walls; installing all new plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, flooring, ambient and task lighting; and replacing windows and radiators will usually take five to seven working weeks from demo to completion. An average bathroom (typically around 6' x 8') with the project including the following: labor for plumbing replacement; carpentry; tiling of room including floors and walls; and setting of fixtures, usually takes from four to six work weeks. A media room or closet installation can take from one to two work weeks to complete.
Question: How are payments generally made?
Answer: Initially, a design fee is required to start the project, which can vary from $3,000 to $6,000, depending on the size of the project.
This fee is applied to the deposit of the contract for the project. Because all materials are custom-designed for each project, a 50% deposit is required. Subsequent payments are made as the project progresses so the client is abreast and in control of payments vs. progress.
Question: What is the warranty for Abbey's workmanship?
Answer: In nearly every state, Abbey's is required to give a one-year guarantee on all products and services excluding appliances, which have their own manufacturer's warranty schedules.
Question: Why will my project be photographed by Abbey's?
Answer: This is done for several reasons. Abbey's wants to have professional documentation of the firm's projects, since each one is custom and never to be repeated. The client is given one set of photos as a gift. We often use the photos on our web site as an example of our work we can show to other prospective clients. And, finally, photographs are sometimes used for submissions to publications that feature kitchen, bath and interior design and remodeling projects.
Question: If my kitchen, bath or interior is selected by a publication for an article or ad, what is the typical process?
Answer: A professional photographer will come to your home, stylize the room being photographed, take a series of photographs and submit select photos to various appropriate publications. Your name, address and contact information will NEVER be included unless you decide to allow it. Further, you may decide to allow the writer to interview you for an article or to add quotes to accompany the photos. Most of Abbey's clients who have this experience find it to be fun and something of which they are proud. Typically, they include a copy of the picture and/or magazine in their house records for posterity or use it for resale negotiations or insurance documentation.
Testimonials: http://www.abbeys.com/about_testimonials.htm
Without the satisfaction of our clients, our business has no meaning or purpose. Abbey's exists to meet and exceed the expectations of families and individuals who want to go beyond the ordinary and toward the extraordinary. The verbal comments are too numerous to mention, but here are some actual comments from letters we have received that you may find of interest (we'd be happy to show them to you when we meet in person):
"Our 'dream kitchen' is done and not only is it exquisite, we're enjoying it immensely. We had done a lot of homework, but you gave us ideas that we had never considered." Beth and Scott, New Providence, New Jersey
"(My wife) and I express our appreciation to you for the excellent job you did in designing and installing a new kitchen for us. It is a magnificent job. We would deem it a privilege to recommend you to our friends should they develop an interest in doing a kitchen or a bathroom." Wallace, Park Avenue, NYC
"We are delighted with the job you did. The kitchen, in a word, is perfect! I enjoy cooking for my family and friends. There have been many wonderful evenings we've spent in the kitchen you put together. People love being in it because it is so functional, homey, comfortable and great-looking. Thanks to you, our kitchen has truly become the busiest and most used room in our home." Andrew, Park Avenue, New York
"This is a note to tell you how much I love the kitchen. I feel like I moved into a new house. It's beautiful, it's functional and it's mine! You listened to all my needs and wants (sometimes they're not the same thing) and you tried to give me everything. It was an absolute pleasure working with (you)." Tricia, Marlboro, NJ
"I believe that many people hesitate to undertake needed or desired home improvements because of the fear of the hassle and disruption typically associated with such projects. Steve Meltzer, by thorough planning and exemplary day-to-day supervision, kept these negatives to an absolute minimum on the major renovation (of) our 125 year-old home. His attention to detail and timely follow-up were remarkable. The end product is a beautiful and superbly-functional kitchen." Peter & Ruth, Millburn, NJ
"We want to thank you for all your help in planning our new kitchen and making it a reality. You possess tremendous expertise, and we are grateful to you for suggesting exciting possibilities and guiding us through the process of putting together what has become our favorite room in the house! We had been planning our renovation for a number of years, but had it not been for your many inspired design suggestions, the final outcome would have been much less impressive and satisfactory to us in the long run." Jacqueline & James, Hoboken, NJ
"Abbey's accomplished a remarkable metamorphosis of our old, dingy, depressingly cramped bathroom into a real, functional thing of beauty that all our friends and relatives call 'the most smashing bathroom on the East Coast.' We were so delighted with your most professional approach, extremely creative design advice, attention to detail, quality of courteous workmen and products that we also had you do a complete, newly-redesigned kitchen for us and left you our keys so the job could be finished while we were away. Both our new bathroom and kitchen came out better than we possibly could have anticipated, and must be seen to-be-believed. It was our genuine pleasure to work with you." Seena & Abe, Cranford, NJ
"We want to express our gratitude for the great job you and your people did in the design and construction of our new bathroom. The room is beautiful, and our relatives and friends (our chief critics!) have been very favorably impressed, without exception. The end result was well worth the little problems that accompany any project of this magnitude. You handled those few items, not only with professionalism, but with concern for our preferences, and we appreciate that. Jane and I are extremely pleased with the results, and we believe that if we had the skill to do the job ourselves we could not have come nearly as close to perfection and the project would have taken forever-literally!" Bob and Jane, Summit, NJ

Melabee M. Miller is an architectural photographer who has been shooting on location in the New York Metropolitan area for over 20 years. Her work on Drumthwacket, New Jersey's Governor's Mansion, is a part of the book entitled “Our Governors' Mansions.” She regularly shoots for designers, architects, builders and magazine editors.
Her work includes interiors in every architectural style from small cottages to thirty room mansions. You'll find her photographs on the pages of local and national newspapers, magazines and books. She is the past president of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers.
Melabee has been known to shoot some travel photography (favorite country: Italy) and details (flowers, sails and many doors) but, except for a family portrait or two, she shoots nothing that talks back or moves.

Privacy Policy: http://www.abbeys.com/about_privacy.htm
Abbey's privacy policy is simple. We do not sell any information we collect on our site to any third-parties. We do not conduct e-commerce on our site, so we do not collect any credit card or other financial information that can be intercepted or abused by people who use robots to intercept insecure page requests across the internet.
The sole purpose we have in collecting information is to capture responses from people who are interested in our services. We use the information to contact people to begin a dialogue that may or may not result in prospective clients contracting with Abbey's to use our design and remodeling expertise.
We also have an email signup section on our form, which we use to publish a periodic email newsletter on design ideas and trends. If someone subscribes to this newsletter, we will send them messages from time to time (unless they decide to "opt-out" at any given point).
We may send emails to our subscribers that contains information and offers from other partners of ours, but we will always identify that the message is being sent because the recipient subscribed to Abbey's email newsletter list. If you feel the message if of interest, we hope you appreciate our initiative in sending it to you. If you don't, you can either disregard it or unsubscribe at any time.
If you have any questions, comments or need any additional information, please feel free to email us.
Thank you for your interest in Abbey's. We look forward to working magic for you soon!

About This Web Site: http://www.abbeys.com/about_this_web.htm
When we set about to redesign this web site, we decided to optimize it for people using a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels on a 17" monitor, a cable modem or DSL connection, and the latest version of Macromedia Flash. The main font we have selected for viewing this site is Verdana. If you don't have Verdana, we suggest Arial.
We also have optimized it for Internet Explorer 5 and higher, and we have noted problems and issues with other browsers and versions.
Recognized Problems:
If you are using a 56k modem, pages may seem to take a long time to load and some of the rollover images may not appear to work because of page loading issues. We apologize for this, but there is little we can do to speed up a slow web connection.
If you don't have a recent version of Macromedia Flash, you may be prompted to go to Macromedia's site to get it. We recommend that you always have the latest version of necessary browser plug-ins to avoid incompatibility problems.
If you're on a Mac, using Netscape 4 and under, some of our forms may look bad and some of our fonts may look too large, or too small. The form problem is being addressed. The font problem is due to a setting in Netscape that enables a user to set their browser fonts to override the fonts and sizes selected by the developers of a web site. This can be corrected by going into your Preferences and de-selecting a checkbox that controls this functionality.

Please feel free to contact us toll-free at 800-823-4513 with anything else you feel needs fixing on the site. We will try to respond to your request in a timely manner, but, frankly, not all problems can be solved across all browser versions and platforms.
We appreciate your interest in our web site, and we hope you have an enjoyable browsing experience.

Site Index Page: http://www.abbeys.com/site_index.htm
We have several forms on our web site, but translating that information into text is of little to no value on this page. One form is for joining our outbound email list. Another is for arranging a call back from Steven Meltzer if you are considering a project. Another is for requesting a CD-ROM presentation you can play back on a computer. The last is our general contact form, which is for general use. For anyone who is blind or visually impaired and reading this on our web site, calling us at our 800-823-4513 toll-free number is the best way to get the information you need to help you make a decision about having your kitchen, bath or interior designed or remodeled.
